Summer Safety Tips for the Elderly
Summer is a wonderful season to spend some time outdoors with family and friends. The summer breeze is calling out our seniors to have some fun under the sun. However, it’s important for seniors to prioritize their health throughout the season so they have more days to make memories with the ones they love.
Aging adults receiving home health services in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania can surely benefit from the following summer health tips:
- Stay Hydrated
Dehydration is a common condition seniors are susceptible to, and their risks of getting dehydrated or experiencing heat stroke increase during the warm season. To combat this, seniors will have to increase their fluid intake. If your senior loved one is not into drinking water, make them eat their fluid with some juicy fruits and vegetables. - Wear Protective Clothing
Stock up on light-colored and loose-fitting clothes made from natural fabrics to help your loved ones adapt to the sunny weather. Sun-protecting accessories like gloves and eyeglasses are a huge help as well. If your senior loved ones need help revamping their closet, they can always ask for assistance from a home health care service provider. - Use a Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen
Sunscreens or sunblocks that block both UVA and UVB rays keep your skin protected from the heat of the sun. Let your elderly wear sunscreen even when they have no outdoor plans. Reapplying sunscreen throughout the day would also be best if they’re constantly under the sun, which is not recommended. As much as possible, help your seniors find some shade and stay away from the direct heat of the sun.
